On 14 March 2024 a tornado seventeen miles long entered Winchester from the west and cut a path up to seven hundred yards wide through the town. The National Weather Service estimated 130 mile-an-hour winds in the residential core and 155 to 165 on the east side, where an anchored restaurant building and the church beside it were destroyed.
